Baja Raceway

McDannel and Seraphine Call it a Draw McDanCrew9-25-99.JPG (37908 bytes)

Located just across the US border in Mexico lies Baja Raceway. This NHRA sanctioned 1/8 mile drag strip is located in the city of Mexicali.

CIFCA funny cars started running on this racetrack in the early 90's with the last event in 1994. After a 5 year leave of absence, the fans of northern Mexico were treated to the sights and sounds of blown alcohol funny cars on Sunday, Oct 24. The 6 car matchrace consisted of Gary Kortz, Dave McDannel, Gary & Sean Dale, Bob Godfrey, Jimmy Scott & Jeff Seraphine.

The race was preceded by a promotion in downtown Mexicali. on Saturday night. The 6 teams had their funny cars on display and fired them up to the crowd delight. The party in the streets is common prior to races in Mexico.

The funny cars took to Baja Raceway on Sunday afternoon. The track was very green with little bite. During the first two sessions, McDannel's CHP Camaro was the only one that saw the four second zone with a 4.88. Seraphine was second with a 5.07. These two would pair off in the final for a true winner. The other teams definitely put on a great show with back-pedaling, smokey out-of-shape runs.

Due to oil in the right lane that could not be cleaned up thoroughly, the final pairings decided to still make runs but would call it a draw.

Overall, most had a very memorable time. A good way to wrap up a great year of racing.
